Miriam Serena Vitiello is the 2020 Friedel-Volterra laureate

To honor the memory of Vito Volterra and Jacques Friedel, the Italian Physical Society (SIF) together with the Société Française de Physique (SFP), awards a prize for a physicist involved in some Italian-French collaboration, in recognition of distinguished work in Physics research carried out within the past 10 years.

The prize is jointly established in 2016 by the two Societies with the aim to commemorate the two eminent scientists as well as to strengthen the relationship between the two Societies. The prize will be awarded on an annual basis and will be alternatively announced by the SIF and SFP, respectively.

Miriam Serena Vitiello

Miriam Serena VITIELLO is awarded for her important experimental research in the field of light-matter interaction phenomena, two-dimensional nano-materials, micro and nano systems, nano- photonics, quantum optics, far-infrared photonics. In particular for the development of innovative devices in the terahertz frequency range.

Miriam Vitiello, Director of Research at the National Research Council (Italy) and Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Italy, has a robust knowledge of the fundamental aspects of nanostructure physics. This has lead her to obtain important results in the design and applications of Quantum Cascade Lasers and detectors in the very demanding terahertz region. A further wide area of her interests is focused on the study of nanophotonics and nanoelectronics with relevant results on Graphene and 2D materials.

The jury has wished to underline very recent key research achievements:

2020 Invention ultrafast room temperature infrared nanodetectors and THz quasi crystal record efficiency QCLs

2019 Invention of THz QCL frequency combs with record dynamic range and the first THz random laser operating in continuous wave.

Her talents on this experimental side can be quoted year after year starting in 2011 with the first nanowire-based THz detectors.
